Shane Long could come back into contention for Southampton when they host Tottenham Hotspur on New Year's Day, manager Ralph Hasenhüttl has said.

The forward has missed the team's last two matches through a knee injury, but has returned to training ahead of Wednesday's match and could be an option for the Saints manager.

That would come as particularly encouraging news, as Hasenhüttl expects not to be able to call upon Michael Obafemi, after he missed Saturday's game against Crystal Palace through illness.

"The players are fit," he said. "We had a little bit more time from the last game to tomorrow.

"Michael was ill and trained today for the first day, but I don't think he is an option for tomorrow.

"Longy is back in training also, and maybe is an option, and the rest were ok today. Yan Valery is still out, but the others are all training."
