In today's top five, we're counting down Nathan Redmond's finest long-range goals in a Southampton shirt in chronological order...

5. On song at Derby
5th January 2019

It’s worth noting that all five of these goals have come since Ralph Hasenhüttl’s arrival as manager, and Redmond was a man transformed by the time Saints headed to Derby in the FA Cup third round last season. The winger was yet to score in 2018/19 before netting in consecutive matches over Christmas, soon after Hasenhüttl’s appointment. But at Pride Park he was on top of his game, scoring an early opener with the help of a deflection. Four minutes into the second half, he doubled his tally in spectacular fashion. Driving towards the left side of the penalty area, Redmond sharply checked back inside on to his right foot and dispatched a stunning curling shot that left goalkeeper Kelle Roos rooted to the spot.

4. Taking the low road
2nd February 2019

Redmond’s first Premier League goal of 2019 came four weeks later – a timely second-half opener at Burnley. This was about more than just the finish, as Redmond received a low pass from Jan Bednarek on the half turn, midway inside the hosts’ half of the field. Typically direct, he headed straight for goal, slowing down only to nutmeg former Saint Jack Cork, before crashing a low 20-yard drive into the bottom corner of the net. It was another sign that a player of obvious talent had rediscovered his mojo and Redmond proved to be a key man in Saints’ survival mission, as any lingering relegation fears were put to bed with two to go.

3. Signing off in style
12th May 2019

Such was Redmond’s upturn, he was crowned Player of the Year by both his teammates and the Saints supporters at the end of the campaign, which drew to a close against already relegated Huddersfield at St Mary’s. The only goal on the list to be scored on home soil, it was one to savour as the winger darted inside from a wide position on the left to deadly effect. Slowing down his man, Redmond shifted the ball inside to escape right-back Tommy Smith, before doing the same to evade Jonathan Hogg, and letting fly with a 20-yard rocket that sailed into the top corner. Whipping his right foot around the ball, the shot curled back inside the far post and dipped just underneath the crossbar.

2. South coast derby joy
24th September 2019

Redmond was only able to sample 18 minutes of the unique occasion that was Saints’ trip to Fratton Park in the Carabao Cup third round, but that still proved long enough to make his mark on a night to remember for the travelling supporters. Introduced with Hasenhüttl’s men 2-0 up, Redmond watched Cédric put the game to bed with Saints’ third, before rounding off the victory himself with four minutes left. When his initial flick did not reach fellow substitute Shane Long, he chased it down and found himself one against one with Portsmouth’s last defender. Ducking inside into prime shooting territory, he got everything behind his strike – a thunderbolt from the edge of the penalty area, this time back across the goalkeeper and inside the near post.

1. Pinpoint precision at Palace
21st January 2020

His 22nd and latest Saints goal was perhaps the best of the lot, despite its illustrious company. This was all his own work, as Redmond received the ball from Jack Stephens with his back to goal, tightly marked by Crystal Palace defender Martin Kelly. Wriggling into space with those dancing feet, he showed his strength to hold off retreating midfielder James McArthur, which bought him the yard of space he needed to unleash a shot. What followed was an explosive strike that flew across goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, who dived full length but was never going to keep it out, as the ball crashed into the top corner of his net.
