Ché Adams explained how proud he was to have broken his Southampton duck with a 40-yard strike which sealed three points at St Mary's against a top Manchester City side.
The striker was on hand to collect an interception by Stuart Armstrong and, without so much as a second thought, lobbed a beautiful shot over City keeper Ederson, who was left stranded.
Adams, who signed last summer from Birmingham City, was handed a starting berth by Ralph Hasenhüttl for the first time since the retart, and duly rewarded his manager with the only goal of the game.
Speaking about the strike, he said: “Obviously I’m buzzing, all the lads have helped me along the way. Everyone has kept faith in me including the fans, the staff, the players so I’m just delighted.
“It was instinctive like you said but we know Man City are a high [defensive] team, they like to keep high and so does the goalkeeper so when the opportunity came up, I just took it.
“There was no hesitation at all if I’m honest. As soon as I looked up I knew what I was going to do. I thought it was going to go over but all that mattered is that we got the three points."
The 23-year-old has had to be patient to get his first goal but has always had the backing of his team-mates, which was shown during tonight's celebrations, Adams added: “It means the world to me [the players celebrating together]. It’s been a hard couple of months, but we got there today.
“Obviously from last week the lads were on their knees begging me to score but it went in this week and it’s paid off.
“It’s been a season of learning with the strikers that are up there. It’s hard to get a place but we just keep working every day and slowly and gradually we’ll get there.”
