Southampton FC Women’s striker Ella Pusey lauded the work of her teammates in pre-season, following her hat-trick which inspired their win over Buckland Athletic on Sunday.
Pusey scored her first just shy of the 20-minute mark, skipping past the defender and showing her composure to put it past the onrushing Buckland keeper.
The second came shortly after the break as Saints’ number nine got on the end of a deflected cross to slam home what was her fourth in two games.
A hat-trick was sealed on the hour mark with arguably the pick of the bunch, as she cut in from the left flank and finished into the top left-hand corner.
“Delighted with the win,” said Pusey following the win. “Obviously it’s nice to score a hat-trick but at the end of the day it’s all about the three points and the girls put a top performance in so we’re all pleased.
“It’s been a great shift from the girls, great start to the season. We worked hard over pre-season and during COVID and lockdown and I think it’s paying off. We want to kick-on and start putting our stamp on the league.
"It came round really quick [the new season], but we trained hard and the girls trained really well away from the club. All of our hard has paid off really."
Saints face Southampton Women away from home on Wednesday night, but Pusey’s belief in her side shone through when asked about their chances.
Southampton Women were the only side to take points off of Saints during last season.
“We’re confident. We know they’re a good side but we have to focus on our own abilities and we know we can go and get the win there.”
