Bednarek: We still have a lot of work to do

It had all looked so good for Saints at half time, with Ralph Hasenhüttl team leading 2-0 through a Bednarek header and James Ward-Prowse free-kick, as they looked for a first home win over their opponents in 17 years, but Ole Gunnar Solkjaer's side stormed back after the break, as Bruno Fernandes kick-started the turnaround ahead of substitute Edinson Cavani netting twice late on.

"First half, it started perfect for us," said Bednarek. "We did what we wanted, we won so many balls, we scored goals, we created chances and I would say everything was perfect for us, but the second half I think we were a little bit too sloppy, we lost too many balls and then we let the opposition feel that they could get something and that's what happened. 

"They have so many qualities they don't need many chances to score. I would say they were clinical and they got the win. We have a lot of positives from the game, but not the result, so we still need to work very hard to get points."

The result extended a bizarre record for Bednarek, who has now scored three times for Southampton, with each goal coming in a game where they led 2-0 at home before losing 3-2.

"Maybe we felt a little bit too comfortable, we weren't working hard enough and that's what happens," he said. "Until the last minute you have to be focused and I hope we will be next game."

But, for all the disappointment, Bednarek explained that Saints must stick to the formula that had seen them come into this match riding a seven-game unbeaten run.

"We just need to keep doing what we did," he said. "I wouldn't say it was a bad game, I think we just missed little details and it shows we still have a lot of work in front of us.

"We have to stay humble, keep working hard and sticking together as a team."
