Hasenhüttl: We are missing something in final third

Ralph Hasenhüttl admitted Southampton were missing a clinical edge in front of goal as his side were held to a goalless draw by SK Austria Klagenfurt.

Saints hit the woodwork twice in the first half, as Will Smallbone struck a post and Ibrahima Diallo the underside of the crossbar, before Hasenhüttl changed his entire outfield at the interval.

Saints’ dominance only increased thereafter, but Adam Armstrong’s 67th-minute penalty was saved, and there proved no way through the stubborn hosts.

“We had two different teams in two halves, tried to mix it a little bit from the last game,” Hasenhüttl said.

“The output is far from enough, which is what means the result, because we had two or three big chances where we have to score, and missed a penalty where we have to score.

“It’s a question of how quick you can score the goals, but this is the issue, we don’t score in these moments.

“In some parts I liked what I have seen, but, especially in the final third, like we always say, we are missing something.

“Our problem last year was that when we are coming in these areas, we are not scoring the goals. From these chances we need to take more – we had two shots on the post and bar, but we know this, we know we have to do something there.

“The games are important for us to see what we are missing and we have used the time quite good, I think.

“We need to work on a few things again and we have some strong opponents coming up before the Premier League is starting.”
