Adam Armstrong focused on the positives presented by the second leg, following Southampton’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Saints started the second half with purpose, controlling possession and creating some chances as Newcastle sat back.

But Nathan Jones’s side were dealt with a double blow in the space of five minutes, Joelinton tapping home the winner on 73 before Armstrong’s apparent equaliser was ruled out for handball.

Despite a disappointing end to the first leg, the Saints striker provided a reminder that there was still football left to be played in this cup tie.

“The lads are gutted, it’s a harsh goal that’s been given against us but it’s one of those things,” said the 25-year-old, “but it’s only 1-0, it’s not as bad as it sounds.

We can't get too down, we're still in it and it's going to be a massive game next tuesday.

“We’ll go to St James’ with something to believe, it’s going to be a great atmosphere next week. It’s a massive game, what footballers live for, semi-finals, big competitions, chance to get into Wembley.

“We knew we had a few chances in the second half we have to do better with. They score a goal on the break and it’s hard to take when you’re digging in so well and creating chances.

“But we can’t get too down, we’re still in it and it’s going to be a massive game next Tuesday. There’s massive excitement, it’s going to be a huge game. It’s going to be a great atmosphere with both sets of fans.

“It’s something we’re going to work hard on all week to try and put it right because we’re going to go there and have a right go.”
